German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp. The peculiar memorial and testimony of a German villainy in Poland under occupation. Auschwitz-Birkenau is the only concentration camp, in 1979 listed under UNESCO World Heritage List. Described as „death factory”. After the 2nd World War started, in 1940 German administration formed a camp where political prisoners and the opposition – mainly Poles – were to be taken. It has been steadily rebulid up to the place of main mass holocaust of 1,1 millions of Jews from all over Europe. 140-150 thousands of Poles, 23 thousands of Romes, 12 thousands captives from Russia and other countries. After the War, in 1947 part of the buildings were transformed into the Museum, that now is the peculiar memorial and testimony of a German villainy in Poland under occupation. It takes 4 hours to visit it.
The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the most precious mineral and historical sites in Poland where millions flock to each year. Here you can learn about the techniques of extraction of raw minerals that was used 700 years ago. In the 3 km of winding corridors you will descend 800 steps and witness the striking chambers carved out by the miners, an underground lake and unique salt carved statues. There are accessible routes for wheelchair users. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
